Overview

Introduction

This publication presents the labour demand statistics based on the Quarterly Employment Survey conducted on formal private sector establishments encompassing major economic activities namely Agriculture, Mining & Quarrying, Manufacturing, Construction and Services. The principal statistics of employment presented in this report are jobs, filled jobs, vacancies and jobs created by economic activity and skills category.

Labour Demand, Fourth Quarter of 2024

During the fourth quarter of 2024, the number of jobs in the economic sector increased by 1.3 per cent year-on-year, reaching 9.05 million (Q4 2023: 8.94 million). Meanwhile, there were 8.86 million filled jobs, maintaining a filled jobs rate of 97.9 per cent. The vacancy rate remained at 2.1 per cent, with 193.6 thousand unfilled positions, up from 190.2 thousand in Q4 2023. Furthermore, there was a 1.3 per cent year-on-year growth in jobs created registering a total of 31.5 thousand new jobs (Q4 2023: 31.1 thousand). 

Labour Demand by Skills Category

In terms of distribution by skill category, the semi-skilled category accounted for the largest share, contributing over half of the total of all indicators, followed by the skilled and low-skilled categories.

The skilled category registered 2.27 million jobs, indicating a 1.4 per cent year-on-year increase from 2.24 million  jobs in Q4 2023. Apart from this, the rate of filled jobs was 97.9 per cent, with 2.22 million jobs being filled, while the vacancy rate stood at 2.1 per cent, corresponding to 47.6 thousand vacancies.  However, the number of jobs created in this category declined by 1.9 per cent, with only 8.4 thousand new jobs recorded compared to the same quarter last year (Q4 2023: 8.6 thousand).

During this quarter, semi-skilled category remained the largest contributor, made up 62.5 per cent of the total jobs, with 5.66 million jobs. The filled job rate stood at 98.1 per cent, corresponding to 5.55 million filled jobs, while the vacancy rate was 1.9 per cent, with 108.5 thousand vacancies. Additionally, jobs created in this category increased by 1.9 per cent, equating to 19.7 thousand new jobs (Q4 2023: 19.3 thousand).

As for the low-skilled category, the number of jobs grew by 1.5 per cent, registered 1.13 million jobs compared to 1.11 million in Q4 2023. A total of 1.09 million jobs were filled with a filled jobs rate of 96.7 per cent, while 37.5 thousand jobs left vacant, representing a vacancy rate of 3.3 per cent. There were 3.3 thousand new jobs were created, making up 10.6 per cent of the total jobs created. 

Labour Demand by Economic Activity

Analysing the breakdown of labour demand by economic activity, the Services sector led with the largest share of 51.9 per cent (4.70 million) of total jobs, followed by the Manufacturing sector at 27.7 per cent (2.50 million). The Construction sector contributed 14.0 per cent (1.27 million), while the Agriculture sector made up 5.5 per cent (502 thousand). The Mining & Quarrying sector had the smallest share at 0.9 per cent or 80 thousand jobs.

The Services sector was also the top contributor of filled jobs with 52.7 per cent, representing 4.67 million filled jobs. This was followed by the Manufacturing and Construction sectors with 27.0 per cent (2.39 million) and 14.1 per cent (1.25 million) of filled jobs, respectively. 

In terms of jobs vacancy, the Manufacturing sector led with 57.0 per cent or equivalent to 110.5 thousand unfilled positions. Meanwhile, the Agriculture and Construction sectors contributing 16.5 per cent (31.9 thousand) and 13.3 per cent (25.7 thousand) of the vacancies each.

Besides, the Services sector dominated jobs created this quarter, accounting for 49.9 per cent (15.7 thousand) of all new jobs. The Manufacturing sector come next at 34.9 per cent (11.0 thousand), followed by Construction with 10.7 per cent (3.4 thousand).
